"Break The Ice" - The John Farnham Album That Never Was

In 1984, whilst John Farnham was in Los Angeles, California working on the LRB album, "Playing To Win" he recorded some vocal tracks at The Pasha Music House in Hollywood. At the time, John was somewhat disenchanted with LRB, and was also in financial trouble as LRB failed to pay the bills. John, in an effort to make some extra money on the side, provided his amazing voice to 10 studio tracks. These tracks were subsequently used on a number of movie soundtracks and were effectively "lost" in time due to the success of "Whispering Jack" and John leaving LRB. This article hopes to shed some light on these gems, and also let people have the opportunity to enjoy some truly excellent Farnham artifacts.

Curb Records intended to release a number of (if not all of) these songs on an album which was to be called "Break The Ice". "Break The Ice" was meant to have the catalogue number INT 147.730, however, for unknown reasons, this album was never manufactured or released, thus the 10 studio songs were not officially collated... until now!

Break The Ice - 3:16
(S. Shifrin, B. Marlette)

Produced by Bob Marlette and David J. Holman
Executive Producer: Rick Riccobono

Notes: This track was first officially released in 1984 as the A-Side on a 7" vinyl
single (INT 112.732) and also as a 12" coloured vinyl maxi-single (INT 127.727) by Curb
Records. The singles were released in Europe and the USA only.

The song later appeared on the 1986 12" vinyl and cassette soundtrack for the BMX film
"RAD" (also known as "Hell Track" with a catalogue number of  MCA-6166). "Break The
Ice" was also re-released on John's "Anthology 3: Rarities" album (74321518702) in late
1997 by Sony BMG and RCA Records.

A film clip for this song was also made by MCA Records. This clip has been heavily
viewed on YouTube and is now known for its 80's cult status.

Lyrics:
Frozen in silence
Facin' it alone
Gotta keep my cool
Make 'em think I'm made of stone
It's a game of wills we're playin'
A love two made of steel
Balanced on the edges of everything we feel
It's gonna take of we've got
Just to make it through this night
Gotta feel it right through my skin
And it's cuttin' like a knife
Get ready to break the ice
Feels like time is standing still
Aiming right for your heart
Ready to take another spill
Only you can make it right
You can break the ice inside of me
A single minded passion
A solitary stand
I thought I was alone
Left out in the cold again
So I'm givin' you all I've got
I'm gonna make it through this night
And even though I could fall
I'm prepared to loose the fight
Get ready to break the ice
Feels like time is standing still
Aiming right for your heart
Ready to take another spill
Only you can make it right
You can break the ice
Get ready to break the ice
Feels like time is standing still
Aiming right for your heart
Ready to take another spill
Get ready to break the ice
Feels like time is standing still
Aiming right for your heart
Ready to take another spill
Get ready to break the ice
Feels like time is standing still
Aiming right for your heart
Ready to take another spill

Thunder In Your Heart - 3:36
(G. Sklerov, L. Macaluso)

Produced by Bob Marlette and David J. Holman
Executive Producer: Rick Riccobono
(P) & (C) Curb Records
Marketed by Intercord
Ton GmbH, Licensee

Notes: Released in 1986 on the "RAD" soundtrack, this track has also become a cult hit
and frequently appears as the soundtrack to montage clips all over the internet.
The song itself is reminiscent of Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" in the sense that it is
a typical 80's motivational song. Classic!

Lyrics:
You're taking a chance, risking it all
For the thrill of the moment
Taking a stand, you ain't gonna fall
You've always known it
They're dying to shake you,
Trying their best to break you
And though the going is rough, you're going home as a hero
'Cause there's thunder in your heart
Every move is like a lightning
It's the power you feel when you get your taste of the glory
There's a fire gonna start
And you know they're going under
You can light the dark when they hear your heart of thunder.
Cry of the wind, spirit of fire
The heart of a lion
Taking control, burning desire
Your flame never dying
Don't lose that feeling
Don't ever stop believing
There's one more moment of truth and you're gonna face it
'Cause there's thunder in your heart
Every move is like a lightning
It's the power you feel when you get your taste of the glory
There's a fire gonna start
and you know they're going under
you can light the dark when they hear your heart of thunder.
When they hear your heart of thunder.
'Cause there's thunder in your heart
And you know they're going under
You can light the dark when they hear your heart of thunder.
There is thunder in your heart
And you know they're going under
You can light the dark when they hear your heart of thunder

With You (Love Theme from "RAD") - 4:04
(J. Di Pasquale, D. Brayfield)

Talia Film Music
Arranged and Produced by James Di Pasquale
(P) & (C) Curb Records
Marketed by Intercord
Ton GmbH, Licensee

Notes: Also released in 1986 on the "RAD" soundtrack, this track was the love theme
from the movie, and was the B-Side to the "Break The Ice" 7" vinyl.

Lyrics:
I have a dream
And it's probably crazy
But crazy is nothing new
No, the big surprise would be
What if my dream came true
It's just a day kind of deam
But it's growing stronger
The longer I stay with you
Girl it's taking hold of me
Making me think it could really come true
With you by my side who can say
What stroke of luck might strike today
With you I could ride upside down
A carefree clown
Who keeps turning the heads of everyone in town
Holding you close
I could dream forever
But never find love this real
There's no rhyme or reason there
I'm only thinking of how good it feels
With you by my side who can say
What stroke of luck might strike today
With you I could ride upside down
A carefree clown
And keep turning each head we pass in town
Who said....
We'd never stick together this long
Now we'll prove them wrong again
Cuz no matter how it ends
We'll have a dream
That's completely crazy
But crazy is nothing new
No, the big surprise would be
The look on our faces the day it comes true
With you by my side who can say
What stroke of luck might strike today
With you I could ride upside down
A carefree clown
As we're waving goodbye to everyone
With you by my side who can say
What stroke of luck might strike today
With you I could ride upside down
Two carefree clowns
As we're waving goodbye to everyone in town

Lyrics:
Playing with hearts, is a dangerous game
So don't play with mine, I'll put you to shame
It's an eye for an eye, you're in a blind rage
And I'm standing my ground, no I'm not afraid
Justice for one, justice for all
You get what you give when you've broken the law
Know what it costs before you commit
Don't start a fight, I won't let you win it
You pay for your crime, the judgement will stand
My back's to the wall, it's out of my hands
Life isn't fair, no favourite sons
There's a time for revenge, and your time has come
Justice for one, justice for all
You get what you give when you've broken the law
Know what it costs before you commit
Don't start a fight, I won't let you win it
From the start to the finish, you live by the sword
But you're over your limit, come and get your reward
Justice for one, justice for all
You get what you give when you've broken the law
Know what it costs before you commit
Don't start a fight, I won't let you win it
Justice for one, justice for all
You get what you give when you've broken the law
Know what it costs before you commit
Don't start a fight, I won't let you win it
I won't let you win it...

Innocent Hearts - 3:59
(R. Bishop)

The Grand Pasha Publisher
Produced by Randy Bishop for Pasha, Wayne Nelson and John Farnham
Engineered by Hans Peter Huber for Pasha
Recorded and Mixed at The Pasha Music House, Hollywood, Calif.
Executive Producer: Phil Gernhard
(P) & (C) Curb Records
Marketed by Intercord
Ton GmbH, Licensee

Notes: Only ever appeared on the "Savage Streets" soundtrack. This track is also an
80's style classic, and is a pretty impressive vocal performance by John.

Lyrics:
This concrete carpet is cold wall to wall
These neon rainbows hold no gold at all
You've got the night, you've got the moves
You've got the tears, cried much too soon
And there are no more innocents
No more innocent hearts
No more innocents
No more innocents in the dark
Black leather angels, on midnight ride
Tough on the surface, but trembling inside
We've got the right, to take a stand
We're gonna make tonight's demand
And there are no more innocents
No more innocent hearts
No more innocents
No more innocents in the dark
We've got tonight
We've got the moves
You've got the tears
Cried much too soon
And there are no more innocents
No more innocent hearts
No more innocents
No more innocents in the dark
And there are no more innocents
No more innocent hearts
No more innocents
No more innocents in the dark...

The Quiet Ones You've Gotta Watch - 4:22
(J. Farnham, W. Nelson)

Australian Tumbleweed Music
Produced by Randy Bishop for Pasha, Wayne Nelson and John Farnham
Engineered by Hans Peter Huber for Pasha
Recorded and Mixed at The Pasha Music House, Hollywood, Calif.
Executive Producer: Phil Gernhard
(P) & (C) Curb Records / Wheatley Records Pty. Ltd.
Marketed by Intercord
Ton GmbH, Licensee

Notes: This was first released in Australia as the B-Side to the "Justice For One" 7"
vinyl single (WRS-012). This song was written by John and LRB bass player Wayne Nelson
during the "Playing To Win" sessions. The song was rejected by the other members of
LRB, and therefore was recorded by John, Wayne and studio musicians. It was never used
on a LRB record, but did appear on the "Savage Streets" soundtrack along with the other
tracks from that recording session.

Lyrics:
Thought of you a world away
I'm in night time, you're in day
... The only link between us is the phone
Food's not good I'm missing you
The only thing that's left to do
Is call collect and love you on my own
I can't stand this anymore
Do not disturb sign's on the door
I think I'll hit the bar and clear it out
Dressed to kill and fit to fight
The thought of making love all night
I find me one that will or won't get mine
It's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones, the quiet ones you gotta watch
Oh, it's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones you never touch
It's the quiet ones, the quiet ones you gotta watch
Hey, gotta watch
It's getting late, a world away
You're in night time, I'm in day
I tried for hours to reach you on the phone
But a thought's occurred to me
I wish I could be there to see
The trust you are, and if you're on your own
Well it's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones, the quiet ones you gotta watch
Hey, it's the quiet ones you gotta watch (you gotta watch)
It's the quiet ones you never touch (you never touch)
It's the quiet ones, the quiet ones you gotta watch
I can't stand this anymore
Do not disturb sign's on the door
I think I'll hit the bar forget the phone
But the thought's of you and me
I wish I could be there to see
I trust you are, I hope you're on your own
Well it's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones, the quiet ones you gotta watch
Oh, it's the quiet ones you gotta watch
It's the quiet ones you never touch
It's the quiet ones, the quiet one's you gotta watch
(The quiet ones you gotta watch)
(Quiet ones you never touch)
You've gotta watch, never touch, the quiet ones
(The quiet ones you gotta watch)
Quiet ones, gotta watch, never touch, you gotta watch, the quiet ones, the quiet ones,
you never touch...

Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way - 3:56
(R. Bishop)

Engineered by Hans Peter Huber for Pasha
Recorded and Mixed at The Pasha Music House, Hollywood, Calif.
Executive Producer: Phil Gernhard

in Europe by Curb Records.

Lyrics:
The fortunate ones
To be fast and free and young
I wanna count myself among the fortunate ones
We wont be denied
We know that time is on our side
We're gonna take the sweet joy ride
We won't be denied
New expectations
The fire in our eyes
Strong are the ties that bind us
Don't need no alibis
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Not tonight
We want it all
And tonight we got the call
We're running hard but we won't fall
Yeah, we want it all
We wont be denied
Like a breaker at high tide
We got the passion and the pride
We won't be denied
New expectations
A moment in the sun
We've waited all our lives
Now we know our time has come
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Not tonight
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Not tonight
New expectations
The fire in our eyes
Strong are the ties that bind us
Don't need no alibis
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Nothing's gonna stand in our way
Not tonight...

My World Is Empty Without You Babe - with Rainey Haynes - 4:03
(B. Holland, E. Holland, L. Dozier)

Produced by Phil Gernhard
(P) & (C) Curb Records
Marketed by Intercord
Ton GmbH, Licensee

Lyrics:
My world is empty without you, baby
My world is empty without you, baby
And as I go my way alone
I find it hard for me to carry on
I need your strength
I need your tender touch
I need the love, my dear
I miss so much
My world is empty without you, baby
My world is empty without you, baby
From this old world
I try to hide my face
But from this loneliness
There's no hiding place
Inside this cold and empty house I dwell
In darkness with memories
I know so well
I need love now
More than before
I can hardly
Carry on anymore
My world is empty without you, babe
Without you, babe
(My world is empty) without you, babe
My mind and soul
Have felt like this
Since love between us
No more exist
And each time that darkness falls
It finds me alone
With these four walls
My world is empty without you, babe
Without you, babe
(My world is empty) without you, babe
Without you, babe
Without you, babe

Lyrics:
Always running, for a girl like you in my life
Keep believing, that this dream will come true if we try
'Cause a life living on the run, is such a wasted time
When we reach up with open arms
I am yours, you are mine
Like the river, running into the sea
We're one
Life'll living, we are running for love
(Still running, still running)
We are running for love
(Still running, still running)
I keep walking, throught the nights and the days, so long
Voices calling, never running away, I hold on
When we live like there is no tommorrow, you always run away
When you live with an open heart, you give up more than you take
Like the river, running into the sea
We're one
Life'll living, we are running for love
(Still running, still running)
We are running for love
(Still running, still running)
Still running for love
(Still running, still running)
We are running for love
(Still running, still running)

Love (It's Just The Way It Goes) - with Sarah M. Taylor - 3:40
(C. Bayer Sager, Q. Jones, C. Magness, G. Ballard)

Essex / CBS Songs / MCA / Control
Produced by Tom Bahler
Executive Producer: Quincy Jones

Notes: A track from the 1985 romantic baseball comedy "The Slugger's Wife" soundtrack,

Lyrics:
Baby we'll work it out, find us a better way
There's still a lot that we both can learn
All that we'd hoped we'd be, someone's fantasy
Just took a funny turn
First we were everything
You were the perfet thing
All in all, somebody always burns
Love, it's just the way it goes
Nobody ever knows
No, not even you and I
But you keep on trying
Love, it's just the way it goes
Forever or for just a day
Well it's just that way
Maybe we went too fast
Travelling different paths
You just can't tell how a life will turn
Picturing different scenes
Cut from magazines
It's not how our candle burns
You were the perfect thing
I wanted everything
All in all, somebody always burns
Love, it's just the way it goes
Nobody ever knows
No, not even you and I
But you keep on trying
Love, like riders in the sky
Some hearts were always meant to fly
And we don't know why
Every day we keep on looking for the sun
Every day we know it's gonna come
It's gonna come
Love, it's just the way it goes
Nobody ever knows
No, not even you and I
But you keep on trying
Love, it's just the way it goes
Forever or for just a day
Well it's just that way
Nobody ever knows
It's just the way love goes
